JANUARY 30, 2021– Dr. Patrick Flynn’s latest video from his show, A Different Perspective, takes a step back from COVID-19 discussions and revisits his original love: the female hormonal system.
This video was inspired by an email sent to Dr. Flynn from a woman asking him to “mansplain” how a woman’s emotional state is misunderstood by our current healthcare regime.
Throughout the video Dr. Flynn questions the chemical manipulation of estrogen in a woman’s body through the use of antidepressants.
Statistics from the Harvard Medical School and the CDC both indicate that women make up for the majority of those who are prescribed antidepressants. Statistics show that women are 2.5 times more likely to be prescribed antidepressants than men are, and that ¼ of women in their 40’s and 50’s use them.
One of the main ingredients in antidepressants are SSRI’s (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Studies have shown that SSRI’s cause sexual dysfunction in women and effects their estrogen production.
Dr. Flynn then explains how human bodies function like a Swiss Watch, which means that our bodies’ gears and switches all rely on each other to maintain a stable environment. However, when one gear or switch is meddled with, then it effects all the other components and creates a dysfunctional environment.
Medical professionals typically diagnose and treat one gear in our body, while disregarding how it may affect our other functions.
In his video, Dr. Flynn ties together the importance of how a woman’s estrogen levels are an indicator of their serotonin levels. By using a graph, he shoes how women’s (ages 12-60) estrogen levels fluctuate four different times per month. This being said, their serotonin levels also fluctuate in accordance with their estrogen.
Dr. Flynn says, “Because women don’t understand their hormonal patterns, they think there’s something wrong.”
Labeling women as ‘sensitive’ has become a derogatory tactic used by society to undermine what indicates a healthy hormonal system. The fluctuation of moods and emotions is supposed to be typical, but because it is so heavily criticized, women feel the need to ‘fix’ it with antidepressants.
The overuse of antidepressants causes hormonal imbalances which leads to further health problems such as: anxiety, depression, and cancer.
