Dr. Gates Maier on “Building Lean Muscle: The Fountain of Youth!and Zinc

This week, Dr. Gates Maier of The Wellness Way — Grand Rapids talked to The Wellness Way Student Club on the importance of building lean muscle and how this can help keep your body young and thriving for years to come. He also goes over the supplement Zinc!

Dr. Gates explained that he primarily became a chiropractor in order to help people improve their quality of life. He told us about how frustrated he gets when patients exclaim “Once I get to 30, it’s all downhill from there” or anything of that sort.

The basics about lean muscle:

  • All muscle is lean
  • There can be fatty infiltration about a muscle, but you don’t build fatty muscle
  • 3 types of muscle: skeletal, smooth, cardiac
  • Sarcopenia: muscle atrophy primary caused by the “natural aging process” but being physically inactive and having an unhealthy diet is really what contributes to this muscle wasting

There is an association between skeletal muscle and the quality of life of cancer patients.

  • The more lean muscle a cancer patient had, the fewer side effects of cancer treatment they experienced, the quicker they recovered from surgery, and the lower the emotion burden from their diagnosis was

The truth about fatty tissue:

  • Not all the adipose tissue we have is going to be the same
  • Fat tissue in ectopic locations (places other than the subcutaneous tissue) such as around the internal organs, is linked to chronic inflammation, impaired glucose tolerance, increased cholesterol, and decreased strength and mobility

Case Study – Karisa

5’7 female, weighing 339lbs

Her main concerns were spondylarthritis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and post-menopausal weight gain

Labs: severely elevated ALT and AST (liver markers), HbA1C of 5.8, triglycerides of 154, LDL cholesterol of 105, and CRP of 3.2

The trouble is, lean muscle is hard to build when the patient is in pain. See, Karisa had 4 children. She lost 1 son when he was 8 (about 15 years ago) and another son when he was 21 (a few years prior to coming in). She didn’t care what her labs looked like because she had so much emotional trauma.

Dr. Gates explained the importance of instilling hope into your patients.

2 months after starting care with Dr. Gates, Karisa was down 25 pounds and her ALT and AST had come down to 35 and 25 respectively. Now about 6 months into care she has lost a total of 54 pounds and is completely out of pain.

Karisa finally saw hope for how her quality of life could improve.

You won’t be able to fix your patients overnight, especially when they’re dealing with emotional trauma, but giving them hope and instilling confidence in them can play a major role in their recovery.

When a patient comes in like this, what’s the game plan?

  • Lower inflammation immediately – decrease sugar, food allergies, etc.
  • Support biochemical process – liver, blood sugar, digestion
  • Get them moving and to resistance training as soon as possible
  • Sauna for lean muscle

Supplement Spotlight: Zinc

  • Second most prevalent trace element in the body (behind iron)
  • Shown to improve sexual and reproductive function
  • Plays a key role in T production
  • Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
  • Immune system support
  • Support of eye health and aging
  • Skin health and muscle repair
  • Supports dopamine production

The liver plays an essential role in zinc homeostasis being the main organ involved in zinc metabolism. Zinc deficiency has been shown in patient with chronic liver disease.

Approx. 85% of zinc resides in the muscles as well as the bones, besides, about 11% of skin is in the skin and liver.

Closing remarks:

Why are you here?

  • Often in school you’re met with disappointment
  • Tough classes, difficulty adjusting
  • It doesn’t need to stay this way
  • Going into practice you will have chaos and amazement
  • See how you will change and be able to change the lives of patients forever

Dr. Gates explained how 2024 is his “year of exponentials”

  • Grew his family, moved his practice to a bigger space, looking for another doc soon

He challenges us to ask ourselves, how can I get exponentially better and exponentially learn so I can help my patients have the best quality of life?
